Born and raised in Kealakekua, Hawaii, Mr. Sumida graduated from Cornell in 1989 with a degree in business from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.  He began his career with ALDI Foods Inc. in Chicago as a District Manager in 1989, later serving as Director of Store Operations in the Greenwood, IN Division and in PA's Center Valley Division.  Since 1998, he has been the Vice President of ALDI's Division overseeing the operation of 60 stores throughout NY.  He is also head of ALDI's National Sustainability and Conservation Committee, which coordinates corporate eco-friendly initiatives.  Under his leadership, East Syracuse's new Bridge Street store has become ALDI's first prototype "green store" in the country.  While at Cornell, Mr. Sumida was the quarterback of the Big Red Football team for four years, winning the Ivy Championship in 1988.  He currently resides in Jamesville, New York with his wife, Amy (Parker) Sumida, Hotel 89', and their three children.

About the 28th Annual CAACNY Book Awards
Each year a committee of CAACNY members selects ten Cornell Book Award winners from a group of outstanding juniors nominated by the 37 high schools in Onondaga and Madison counties.  Of last year's recipients, 7 elected to apply to Cornell, and 5 were accepted.  Winners receive The Elements of Style, originally written in 1918 by William Strunk, a Cornell English professor, and later revised by one of his more illustrious students, E.B. White '21 (Charlotte's Web).  With over 10 million copies sold, it is widely regarded as one of the most influential and best-known English writing style manuals of all time.
